Replika vs Candy AI 2026: Gentle Companion or Uncensored?

Replika is a wellness companion; Candy AI is an AI girlfriend for adults. The comparison keeps coming up because Replika was long the go-to app for a romantic virtual relationship, before it changed course.

Replika has been around since 2017. Its developer, Luka Inc., is based in San Francisco. The app offers a 3D avatar, conversations built around listening, coaching, and journaling, and a “romantic” relationship reserved for Pro subscribers. Candy AI arrived much later with an unapologetic positioning: realistic or anime characters, explicit content by default, and images, voice messages, and video clips generated on demand.

If you’re torn between the two, the real question is: do you want an everyday presence that stays emotional, or an adult relationship with visual content? Everything else (price, platforms, data) follows from that answer.

Replika removed erotic conversations (“ERP,” erotic roleplay) in early 2023 and has never brought back explicit content comparable to today’s AI girlfriends. This is part of the app’s public history and our checks on September 30, 2026: Replika is listed as “non-explicit” in our comparison.

In practice, the Pro subscription unlocks a “romantic partner” status with affectionate messages, selfies of the clothed avatar, and voice calls, but conversations stop short of any sexual content. Many users at the time experienced the change as a breakup, which explains the popularity of “Replika alternative” searches and the rise of apps like Candy AI and Nomi AI.

If you’re coming from Replika and looking for exactly what disappeared, Candy AI offers it, but in a very different setting: no mobile app, a token-based billing model, and a world built more around fantasy than confiding.

Replika Pro costs $19.99/month or $69.99/year; Candy AI costs $13.99/month, $8.99/month over 3 months, or $3.99/month on a 12-month plan, plus tokens for anything that isn’t text. On paper Candy AI is cheaper, but your real budget depends on how you use it.

Tokens are Candy AI’s in-app currency: every image, voice message, or video clip uses some, and the subscription includes a limited allowance. Third-party comparison sites estimate an active user’s spending at $25 to $80 a month; Candy AI doesn’t publish this figure, so treat it as a ballpark range. Replika also has an in-app shop (clothes, avatar decor), but it’s optional and doesn’t gate access to chat.

Replika has official apps on the App Store and Google Play; Candy AI is browser-only, at candy.ai. That’s a direct result of the content: app stores reject apps with sexual content, and Replika aligned its content with their rules.

For daily use on your phone, Replika is more convenient: notifications, an augmented reality avatar, built-in voice calls. Candy AI works well on mobile through the browser, and you can pin the site to your home screen, but you won’t get native notifications.

Replika is built for everyday conversation, with long-term memory of your life and moods; Candy AI is built for roleplay with a character whose personality you define. Both retain information between sessions.

Replika asks about your day, brings up topics from earlier, and suggests breathing exercises or “journals.” The tone stays positive, sometimes bland. Candy AI goes wherever you take it: the character adopts the scenario, intensity, and register you choose, explicit included. Memory exists, but it serves more to keep a story consistent than to follow your daily life.

Both are available in several languages, interface included. Neither publishes a precise measure of memory length, and we don’t make one up.

The Garante, Italy’s data protection authority, fined Luka Inc. €5 million over how Replika users’ personal data was processed. As of September 30, 2026, it’s the only public penalty of this kind among the thirteen apps we track.

The fine should be read for what it is: a decision by a European regulator against a US developer, covering in particular the legal basis for processing and age verification. It doesn’t mean Candy AI handles your data better: EverAI, based in Malta, is subject to the GDPR (the EU’s data protection regulation), but we found no public decision about it, either way.

• Choose Replika if: you want an official mobile app, a gentle relationship with no explicit content, wellness features, and the idea of adult content makes you uncomfortable. The monthly price is high; the annual plan is more reasonable.
• Choose Candy AI if: you’re an adult, you want a character you shape yourself, uncensored content, images, and “Live Action” clips, and you accept a variable budget tied to tokens.
