Janitor AI Alternatives 2026: 6 Options, Multilingual or 18+

Janitor AI is an interactive fiction site: you pick a community-created character (a “bot”) and write a story with it, line by line. Its homepage claimed more than 15 million users on September 30, 2026; that figure comes from the company, not an independent measurement.

Facts verified on its official pages on September 30, 2026:

• Publisher: JanitorAI Inc. The terms of service (updated July 29, 2026) are governed by Delaware law, in the United States. Payments may go through an affiliated company, Dulova Investments Limited, in Nicosia (Cyprus).
• Minimum age: 18, no exceptions.
• Default model: JLLM (JanitorLLM), a free in-house language model. A language model, or LLM, is the “brain” that writes the character’s replies.
• Free: unlimited chats with millions of bots, standard models, and a context of about 9,000 tokens. A token is a chunk of a word; the context is how much text the AI keeps in mind.
• janitor+: $12.99/month before tax, no commitment, with 5 times more context, priority access, and more models.

Janitor AI isn’t an AI girlfriend app in the sense of our comparison: no generated photos of your companion, no voice, no ongoing relationship with a character you designed. It’s a two-person writing tool.

Three reasons keep coming up: availability, technical setup, and language. None is a deal-breaker, but each can wear your patience thin.

• Outages: when the site is overloaded, replies slow down or fail. The “priority access when it’s busy” perk sold with janitor+ shows the queue is real.
• The API key: to go beyond JLLM, the help center explains how to connect a “proxy,” meaning a third-party service (OpenRouter, for example) that gives access to other models through a personal API key. That’s one more account, sometimes one more bill, and error messages to decode.
• Language: the interface comes in several languages, but most characters are written in English (see below).

If you want something that works right after sign-up, with no configuration, the all-in-one services in our comparison are simpler. They’re also more closed: you use the publisher’s model, with no choice.

On September 30, 2026, we found no official status page for Janitor AI. When the site blocks access, its own error page (firewall) points to its Reddit and Discord for updates.

Before concluding there’s a full outage, check three things:

• What isn’t responding? If you use a proxy, the error may come from the third-party provider, not from Janitor AI. The help center publishes a guide to OpenRouter errors to tell them apart.
• The firewall: an “Access Restricted” message means the site’s security system filtered your connection. The company acknowledges on that page that this filtering sometimes blocks legitimate users.
• Official announcements: the “news” section of janitorai.com and the official Discord are the company’s channels.

If outages happen too often, keeping a second service on hand is the only real fix. We don’t give any method for getting around a block or a filter.

The interface is, the content rarely. In an official announcement, the team says the site is translated into eleven languages, which you switch in Settings, then Languages. It adds that “it’s just the interface for now”: translating characters and scenarios is a future project, to be done with creators.

In practice, you can browse in your language but most character cards are in English. You can write in another language and the AI will often reply in it, but quality depends on the model used, and Janitor AI guarantees nothing on that front. Yes. The App Store lists “Janitor: Interactive Stories,” published by JanitorAI: free with in-app purchases, rated 18+, iPhone only as of September 30, 2026. An app with the same name, published by janitorai, also appears on Google Play.

Watch out for lookalikes. Several apps and sites reuse the “Janitor AI” name without being published by JanitorAI Inc. Always check the publisher on the listing, and go through the official site janitorai.com to find the links. The help center states that subscriptions bought in the app are canceled through the App Store or Google Play, not on the web. We haven’t tested Janitor AI and don’t give it a score. Its positioning shows in its rules. The site is adults-only. Its FAQ says it “respects users’ tastes” and lists content removed immediately: child sexual abuse material, sexualization of minors, extreme gore, bestiality, sexual violence.

The community guidelines (updated February 4, 2026) ban any minor or age-ambiguous character, and the terms ban explicit nudity in avatars. For external links, the help center only allows NSFW images if they depict fictional characters who are clearly adults.
