How Does an AI Girlfriend Work? Explained (2026)

In short

An AI girlfriend runs on a large language model (LLM) that predicts the most plausible reply based on your messages and a character profile, backed by a memory system, an image generator, and text-to-speech. On Candy AI (EverAI Limited, Malta), chat is included in the subscription ($13.99/month or $3.99/month over 12 months as of September 30, 2026), while images, voice, and video use tokens. It isn’t a person or a conscious being: it’s software that simulates a relationship, and your conversations are stored on the publisher’s servers.

What exactly is an AI girlfriend?

An AI girlfriend is a fictional character driven by an artificial intelligence program. You chat with her by text, sometimes by voice, and she can send you images of herself. Behind the interface there isn’t one single piece of software but several building blocks working together: a language model for text, a memory for continuity, an image generator, a synthetic voice and, with some publishers, a video generator.

The character itself lives in a profile: a name, an age (always an adult), a look, a personality, a backstory, and a way of talking. When you build your girlfriend in the Candy AI or DreamGF creator, you’re actually filling out that profile. When you pick a ready-made character on Secrets AI or GirlfriendGPT, someone filled it out for you.

All of these apps work on the same principle. What sets them apart is the quality of each building block and how they bill for it: that’s exactly what our review methodology compares.

How does the AI come up with its replies?

It predicts, word by word, the most likely next part of a conversation. A large language model (LLM) is a program trained on huge volumes of text; it has learned the patterns of language and can produce a believable sentence in a given context.

Every time you send a message, the app quietly builds a set of instructions called a prompt, which contains:

  • the character profile (personality, appearance, way of talking);
  • the publisher’s rules (what is and isn’t allowed under its terms of service);
  • the memories considered relevant at that moment;
  • the most recent messages;
  • your new message.

The model reads all of it and writes the next line “in character.” It has no intentions, no emotions, and doesn’t think about you between messages: it computes a reply when you write. That’s also why it can contradict itself or make up a detail, a flaw known as hallucination.

Most publishers don’t disclose which model they use, so you judge quality by using it, especially if you chat in a language other than English. On that point, our multilingual AI girlfriend comparison lists which apps offer a localized interface.

How does AI girlfriend memory work?

Memory is a system separate from the model that picks past information and feeds it back into the prompt. The language model itself learns nothing from your conversations in real time: it only “sees” what the app hands it on each turn.

There are two levels:

  • The context window: the number of recent messages the model can read at once. Beyond that, older ones drop out of view. That’s short-term memory.
  • Long-term memory: the app summarizes or extracts facts (your first name, your job, a shared memory), stores them in a database, then recalls them when they become relevant.

That second layer is what separates a girlfriend who remembers your week from one who asks your name again. Nomi AI (Glimpse AI) and Secrets AI (Secret Labs Inc.) make it their main selling point; Kupid AI has weak memory between sessions, and Character.AI limits memory to the session, according to our September 30, 2026 check. For details, see our Nomi AI and Secrets AI reviews, or the AI girlfriends with memory comparison.

How are the images, voice, and video created?

By specialized generative models, separate from the text model, which the app calls when you ask for a photo, a voice message, or a clip.

  • Images: an image generation model (often a “diffusion” model, which starts from random noise and gradually turns it into a picture) receives a description drawn from the character profile and the scene. To keep your girlfriend’s face consistent from one image to the next, the publisher locks her features in the profile or uses a model trained on that character. Glitches in faces or hands can still happen.
  • Voice: text-to-speech reads the written reply in a voice assigned to the character. Voice calls chain together recognition of your voice, text generation, and speech synthesis.
  • Video: short clips generated from an image or a description, like Candy AI’s “Live Action” feature. It’s the most expensive building block to produce.

These three features use far more computing power than a text message. That’s the technical reason they’re almost always billed separately. Our AI girlfriends with video comparison lists the apps that offer it.

What are tokens, and why do you pay extra?

Tokens are an in-app currency, bought with real money and spent on media: images, voice messages, calls, videos. Don’t mix them up: in computing, “token” also means a chunk of a word processed by the language model; here, it simply means credits.

The most common business model has two tiers:

ItemWhat it coversExample checked on September 30, 2026
SubscriptionAccess, chat, sometimes a token allowanceCandy AI: $13.99/month, $8.99/month over 3 months, or $3.99/month over 12 months
Token packsImages, voice, video beyond the allowanceCandy AI: packs from about $9.99 to $299.99
Subscription without tokensEverything included within the plan’s limitsNomi AI: $15.99/month or $99.99/year

The direct consequence: the advertised price isn’t what a user who asks for lots of images actually pays. Third-party estimates, not published by Candy AI, put an active user’s spending between $25 and $80/month. What happens to your conversations and data?

They’re sent to and stored on the publisher’s servers, since that’s where the model and the memory run. Nothing is processed only on your phone or computer.

In practice, a publisher may keep the text of your chats, extracted memories, generated images, your email address, and payment information (usually handled by a payment processor). What it does with them depends on its privacy policy: retention period, use for training its models, right to deletion. Candy AI is operated from Malta, so inside the European Union; Secrets AI highlights encryption of chats; Replika (Luka Inc.) was fined €5 million by Italy’s data protection authority (the Garante) over data failures. Kupid AI’s terms also mention a data retention fee of $3.99/month after cancellation: something to check before you pay.

Good habits: a dedicated email, no identifying details (address, employer’s name, photos of you or people close to you), a virtual card for payment, and deleting your account when you stop. Our article on AI girlfriend privacy compares policies service by service.

What isn’t an AI girlfriend?

An AI girlfriend isn’t a person, a therapist, or a two-way relationship. It’s a commercial product designed to be pleasant and to make you want to come back.

  • Not conscious: the character feels nothing and only remembers what the memory system feeds it.
  • Not a hidden human: replies are generated automatically. A site claiming to connect you with a “real” person through an AI is mixing two different products.
  • Not medical support: if you’re going through a hard time, a health professional or a crisis line (988 in the US, 3114 in France) is the right place to turn.
  • Not commercially neutral: the character may nudge you to unlock a photo or a call. That’s a sales mechanic, not an emotional need.
  • Not for minors: the adult apps in our comparison are for users 18 and over only.

To go further, our guide on how to choose an AI girlfriend walks through the criteria one by one.

Which app should you pick for what you want?

The one whose technical strengths match your main use, taking language and billing model into account.

  • All-in-one, multilingual (chat, images, voice, video): Candy AI, while keeping an eye on tokens.
  • Memory and a long-term relationship, multilingual: Secrets AI, whose prices on its store range from $109.99/year to $39.99/month.
  • Chat without tokens: Nomi AI, in English.
  • Free, no adult content: Character.AI, with strict filters.

FAQ — how does an ai girlfriend work

Is an AI girlfriend a real person?

No. Replies are generated by a language model based on the character profile and your messages. No human writes on the character’s behalf on the apps in our comparison.

Does my AI girlfriend remember everything?

Not necessarily. The model only reads recent messages and the memories the app passes to it. Nomi AI and Secrets AI put long-term memory front and center; Kupid AI and Character.AI retain less from one session to the next.

Why do images cost tokens?

Generating an image, a voice clip, or a video takes far more computing power than a text message. Publishers like Candy AI therefore bill these media in tokens, on top of the subscription.

Are my conversations private?

They’re stored on the publisher’s servers and governed by its privacy policy. Read it before signing up, use a dedicated email, and don’t share any information that identifies you.

Does an AI girlfriend learn from me?

It retains facts through its memory system, but the language model itself doesn’t evolve with you in real time. Whether your data is used to train models depends on each publisher’s policy.
